After several European masters perfected the mechanism, for the past several decades Reuge has carried on and advanced his extra-ordinary tradition. Beautiful birds singing to each other in turn, moving their heads and opening the beaks.

These miniature singing bird boxes have been produced by French, German and Swiss artisans for nearly two centuries. Some having been special designes for European Royalty. They are technological marvels, with extremely intricate internal movements that produce the incredible realistic sound of real singing birds, combined with the chirping and fluttering movements of a life like mechanical bird clad in real feathers. Started making them around approximately 1750 a collection is displayed in Palace Versailles, Paris and Patek Philippe Museum in Swiss. The side panels are decorated with blue guilloche enamel hatched guilloche enamel and vertical blocks bordered with white enamel and gilt bronze. The lid is fully enameled, a scene of a young woman on a swing. On sliding the operating lever the lid opens and the full bodied bird pops through the grille and begins singing.

The cage has a gilt brass finish with two feathered birds perched, ready to sing. The lining of the cage floor is soft green velvet. Slide a ˙little lever on the side of the cage and the birds move and sing.

In a beautifully crafted cabinet of finely burled walnut with quarter matched veneer panels and rosewood and boxed wood border banding on the top, front and side, is housed a twelve-tune cylinder musical box with six bells surmounted by silver butterflies. There is an inner glass lid protecting the movement and Samuel Troll Fils brass label on the inside lid. Serial number on the flat-topped winding lever: 4511 The idea of a self playing musical box was developed from the Carillion Bell Towers used in Europe where a rotating barrel, pinned with cogs in certain positions, would move hammers to strike tuned bells at the proper time to produce music.

Large Rosewood Marquetry Cylinder Musical Box,plays several (10) airs. Opening the lid reveals the incredible mechanism and the original Victorian glass. Inside is a comb shaped device tempered to produce a number of teeth varying in length from short to long. The teeth are plucked by pins set into a revolving cylinder. As each tooth is plucked it produces a musical note, and is under a lift-top glass lid. Crank arm is also in the box and buttons with "Change", "Repeat". "Stop" and "Play". E. Paillard & Co is founded in 1814 in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, by Moise Paillard. In 1875 Paillard opens a productions factory in Ste. Croix for the manufacture of cylinder musical boxes.
