Horse of Marly Sculpture
French Sculptor Guillaume Coustou (1677-1746, Lyon France). This piece resides on its original ebonized wooden base. Coustou received many royal commissions for his work. His style was narrative and dramatic with some affinity to rococo works. Coustou often worked with his brother Nicolas Coustou, particularly in the decorations of royal domestic architecture at Versailles. Among his last achievements were his famous "Horses of Marly" (1740-1745) for Marly Park. This group of statues later decorated the entrance to the Champs Elysees in Paris before being moved to the Louvre Museum in 1984. There are only a few copies of his work and some are located at Marly and the Place du Concorde. Coustou was taught by his uncle Antoine Coysevox and spent several years studying in Rome. In 1703 Coustou returned to France.

Tortoiseshell picture frame
A Tortoiseshell picture frame with a picture of a beautiful lady of that era with a pearl necklace and earrings. In nice condition with normal scratching and normal age wear. Turtleshell is a substance with a long history of use for articles of vanity and personal adornment. The term itself is a misleading one. The substance we know as tortoiseshell has nothing to do with land tortoises, rather it is derived from the shells of certain species of sea turtles, notably the hawksbill.
